Don't Miss the Live Sole Clinic

The live sole identification seminar is the single most important educational seminar for new or existing farriers and for horse owners and vets to become aware of in order to stay abreast of the new information that should be brought into today's hoof care regimen.

Why Is Live Sole Critical?

The importance of the live sole and other live structures of the hoof cannot be over stated. Anterior- posterior and medio-lateral balance can all be achieved by using the live sole as a guide. Sole and frog depth can accurately be determined and breakover can be positioned properly.  Before the discovery of the live sole and other live structures of the hoof as guides for the farrier; farriers were working in the dark, playing a guessing game of trimming.

Now with these live structures as guides, farriers, veterinarians and other hoof care practictioners can safely and consistently trim or shoe horses hooves with less damage and risk to the horse. These new hoof mapping techniques, using the live sole, frog, bars etc, can help all hoof care practitioners be  much more accurate  in there application of a trim for barefoot use or for the application of shoes.

Using these new methods can help to eliminate many of the avoidable injuries of the past. Navicular syndrome, impar ligament damage, damage to the flexor attachment of P3 and damage to P3 itself can be avoided.. Many of these shoeing related injuries which we can now avoid have in the past been carreer ending for many equine athletes.  Much of the information in the live sole seminar is brand new and has just been introduced in anatomy books. Don’t be left behind in todays fast paced hoof care world, learn about this information as soon as possible.

Class Description:

There will be a short lecture given by Pat Thacker, RJF, on the new information brought to light in 1999 by Dr. Robert Bowker, Michigan State University.  This will include information put in anatomy books in March of 2002 by Dr. Stashak from Colorado State University.

Featured Speaker:  Dr: Steve Hardy, H-Bar-H Veterinary Clinic

Dr. Steve Hardy of H-Bar-H Veterinary Clinic will lecture on ischemia, vascular compression, and damage to the internal structures of the foot due to over trimming of the live sole and inner wall from traditional trimming and shoe placement techniques. Dr. Hardy will also cover the digital cushion, hemodynamics, and the importance of proper break over and sole depth to avoid soft-tissue injury. There will be a portion on the importance of radiographic markers to assist the farrier.

Immediately following the lectures there will be a live demonstration of how to exfoliate a hoof to properly identify the live sole, frog, and bars and sole callus.

Attendees will then be shown the latest hoof mapping techniques to help locate the coffin bone and other structures in the field with out the help of radiographs.

A hands-on section for attendees to exfoliate a hoof and trim to the live sole will follow this. Attendees will be able to trim a hoof to go barefoot and trim and shoe a hoof. The work will then be radiographed to evaluate shoe placement and sole depth. This is a rare learning opportunity to go through these steps with the veterinarian present for consultation.

This seminar is designed to help the traditional farrier make the transition from traditional perimeter fit horseshoeing to the new science of using the live sole and other live structures as guides for greater success in shoeing and trimming.
